It is well known that the ability to monitor energy use in more detail than monthly bills is a sure way to reduce usage with between 5 and 32%. The key to savings is to involve as much of the organization as possible. Reports and dashboard solutions are great tools for deeper analysis, while visualization helps the more casual users get an overview of the situation.
The ezeio is an excellent tool to collect data from multiple energy meters. All the collected data is stored on our cloud servers, and can be processed and displayed anywhere. The visualization is designed to run as an automatic slide-show, for example in a lobby or cafeteria.
Both real time and historic data is presented in a few easy to understand formats, and can be combined with helpful tips and reminders on how to avoid wasting energy.
The visualization can show data from a single meter, or from multiple meters and multiple geographically spread out facilities. A popular feature is to compare departments or sites based on energy use per employee or area unit which creates a competitive climate to drive down energy waste.
The visualization can also be used with other inputs than energy and power. Any sensor data can be graphed and displayed using the same methods.
Some lessons learned from our visualization projects
- Start with your requirements and make sure you understand the data and what you want to show. There are many visually pleasing designs out there that show useless data, or shows the data in a way that is misleading. Function trumps design!
- The effects of a visualization screen decay with time. The system needs to evolve to continue being valuable.
- It is the combination of visualization screens, reports to key personnel, understanding the information and internal actions that give result. You need to set and communicate goals, create interest and incentives to achieve big savings.
